Confession, I’ve been a bad blogger of late. Life has meant I’ve fallen quite behind and as a result I’ve been sleeping on a product I’ve been dying to try out for some time. The lovely Madison from Irresistible Me got in touch a while back to ask if I would like to try their signature Diamond -yes, diamond, you read right- straighteners and I of course was keen.
Coated in diamond fragments and tourmaline (which for those of you like me who had to Google, is a semi-precious gem stone) these straighteners claim to reduce frizz whilst protecting hair and your natural moisture and oils. Frizzy hair is the bane of my life, I’ve tried everything and am far kinder to my hair than I’ve ever been but I think my hair type is just naturally frizzy and my current straighteners -GHD V Gold Max Styler- only seem to make this worse.
Irresistible Me are well known for their clip-in hair extensions, which are made with human hair, so I knew that these straighteners would be suitable for use on my extensions which are Balmain fill-in / keratin bond. As I’ve had them in for five months, they will be coming out soon and my bonds are quite low down. When straightening at this time of their lifespan I have to be careful not to clip the bonds so a thinner iron like the Irresistible Me Diamond Straightener is ideal. If your hair extensions are synthetic, most pro straighteners will likely not be suitable. These have a max temperature of 230C so I wouldn’t recommend using them on synthetic hair.
As this product comes direct from the USA, it can’t be plugged straight into the mains. I purchased a USA travel adapter which is all you need to get going as they’re dual voltage meaning they work out what voltage is required for the plug and adapt. This is awesome as it means they can be used safely around the World without having to worry, which is an important feature for me as whenever I go I want to be able to take my appliances with me and not worry about blowing them up. Thankfully in the UK with modern fuse boards we’re very safe -we’ve managed to drill through a live mains cable so we’ve tested that theory- but on holiday this might not be the case so always check.
The Diamond straighteners have all the safety features you would expect, like auto shut off and cool tips which are safe to touch. Unlike my GHDs there’s a heat display and indicator with three lights to show the temperature range: low, medium and high. This can be controlled using buttons on the device, which I love as 230C is too hot for my liking (I’ve been making a conscious effort to reduce heat damage to my hair so always use my dryer or straighteners on a middle setting). The instructions advise for thick or course hair I should be using the high setting though, so to test they’re full capability for this review I’ve done just that.
The straighteners feel very light to hold and have an intelligent design which features cool spots you can hold safely, one of which is thumb shaped in the perfect spot where you would naturally hold it. My favourite part of the design is the ceramic plates themselves, as they’re black and visibly glittery from the diamond and tourmaline fragments.
In order to test these properly, I haven’t blow-dried my hair straight. I tend to either blow-dry with a paddle brush and tidy up slightly with straighteners or use straighteners to combat major frizz and wave after only roughly drying. I’m going to be doing the latter today, as I’m interested to see how the features of this straightener help hair like mine.
I’ve definitely moved away from the poker straight hair of the 2000s and like to keep some of the hair’s natural kink in it, so when I straighten I want to remove the waves, defrizz and make generally tidier.
Exhibit A: Some very big, out of control hair which I can do nothing with but put up in a fun bun.
Exhibit B: My hair straightened using the Irresistible Me Diamond Straightener.
I literally just did one swipe per piece of hair and didn’t need to section it to really quickly straighten. The Diamond straightener is considerably hotter than my GHD but as I didn’t need to go over each piece multiple times I didn’t feel that my hair was being frazzled.
Overall I’m really impressed with just how effortlessly this straightener tamed my hair. It’s perfect for styling fresh hair to be completely straight but I love using it to refresh hair before leaving in the morning. I’m always in a rush if leaving first thing and often find sectioning and going over and over hair to take too long.
The diamond and tourmaline seem to have anti-static qualities as with my GHD plates I always need to use anti-static combs and straightening still makes all my split ends stand up on end. I notice also that my hair feels noticeably softer and less crispy for want of a better word, than when using my GHDs.
Whilst both straighteners cost about the same, you’re actually getting more for your money with the Irresistible Me product, as it has an LED digital display, the ability to change the temperature and ‘Turbo Heat Boosting’ technology which in a nutshell, helps keep a consistent temperature whilst styling. GHD are calling their version of this ‘Tri-zone technology’ and it’s only available on their platinum range products which cost a more expensive £165 and don’t even come in a larger plate version like I currently use.
I’ve been a loyal GHD customer since I bought my first straighteners 10 years ago, but I am slightly disappointed they’ve started upping the price for new technology and products, rather than revising and innovating their signature product as they used to. I tend to reach for familiar brands when purchasing hair appliances but this experience has demonstrated that there are clearly other products on the market giving them a run for their money. I love the thought which has gone into the Diamond design and the smart features they’ve introduced.
