Norway - Velkommen Til Tromsø.

Travel Diary

After writing about Paris recently I wanted to continue with some posts about the other places I’ve been to in the past two years.

Northern Norway was the first Nordic country I visited -also the first trip Aaron and I took together- and where I fell completely in love with the Arctic. Nothing makes me dream more of travel than looking through the photos I took whilst there, it was truly an adventure from start to finish which rarely went to plan, but that I’ll never forget.

That Glogg It's Friday

I visited at the end of November, during the dark polar night when we only had four hours of daylight each day. We had annual leave to use and wanted to travel together so picked Tromsø, Norway’s most Northerly city which sits 217 miles North of the Arctic Circle in the hope of seeing whales in the wild and the Northern Lights.

My trip coincided with the release of OPI’s Nordic collection, which I naturally adored. I had my nails done with Thank Glogg It’s Friday before we went.

We landed to snow and freezing temperatures, catching our first glimpse of the Northern Lights as we queued to get off the plane, I was beyond excited but it was such a faint tinge, I felt almost panicked that we wouldn’t see them again.

We managed to get lost for an hour driving around the tunnels which sprawl under the mountains in the centre of Tromsø, before having some very hairy moments on the extremely narrow and icy roads. It’s fair to say that despite feeling excited to have arrived, it felt slightly over-whelming!

As we arrived in darkness it wasn’t until the next day that I saw the huge mountains surrounding everything, which dwarfed the city.

Having safely found our hotel, we spent our first full day in Norway finding food -I have no idea what these cakes were but they tasted amazing- and seeing Tromsø from above, via the cable car. The sun set as we explored the snowy mountain top, so we went back to our hotel to kill some time before setting out on our first Northern Lights hunt.

I’m so excited for you! We’re planning to return briefly next year, whilst doing a little Arctic circle trip. I’ve only been in Winter and it was unreal, but apparently it’s gorgeous in Summer too so whenever you go I think you’ll have an amazing time. I’ve got a few posts about my time there planned for the next couple of weeks, let me know what you end up planning .. Exciting <3
