My Iceland Honeymoon - Part 1

My Wedding, Travel Diary

I can’t believe it’s been over two months since I got back from my honeymoon and wedding in Iceland. I normally get over my post-holiday blues by looking at my photos but this time it was different. Getting married was so intense I spent the week which followed in a bit of a blur. After everyone left to go back to the UK I felt a strange sadness, as it meant our wedding day was over, but it did feel exciting to be embarking on our first adventure together as husband and wife.

What was really surreal were the honeymoon upgrades, I totally didn’t expect that but at every hotel we stayed in we were either upgraded or left cute treats in our room. It was so sweet, obviously we were over the moon about getting married but having so many people genuinely excited for us too felt so nice. It helped keep the magic feeling from the wedding day going, although I will say that the post-wedding comedown struggle is very, very real.

This was our fourth time visiting Iceland in two years, so for once I actually enjoyed a holiday with some relaxing and lazing around. We spent a vast amount of time in hot tubs, spas and hot springs, I’m surprised I haven’t been left permanently pruned.

We normally pick accommodation based purely on what we’re doing and where, but as it was our honeymoon we decided to stay in some more luxurious hotels and picked Hotel Geysir, Hotel ION and hotel Katla which randomly you might spot in this week’s Keeping Up With The Kardashians -if you have embarrassing TV tastes like me- as they stayed there a few weeks before us. ION and Katla are posher, but Geysir is a lot more down to Earth with insanely cheap rates at times given it’s right on the Golden circle and has very chic rooms -they also do a good breakfast- so I would recommend that to anyone passing through.

Hotel ION is in Thingvelier national park, my favourite feature was of course the geothermal heated pool with stunning views.

Thingvelier is stunning in all seasons and the morning after the wedding we went for a walk around the park with our families.

One of the highlights of our honeymoon was definitely the meal we had in the Silfra restaurant in ION. On our previous trips to Iceland we’ve been driving so much and trying to cover so much ground, food was a last priority. On our road trip around the island we ate at service stations most days so we figured we deserved a special meal and Silfra looked incredible. Food in Iceland is expensive but they have some truly talented chefs and a growing foodie scene so it was well worth it. I can’t even remember what I had but it was all vegetarian and really delicious, lots of nuts and some unusual ingredients.

After our meal our waiter told us the chef would like to offer us a dessert as we had got married! I honestly don’t even know how they knew, as we hadn’t said anything but it was such a fun surprise. My dessert featured coffee and chocolate, again I can’t remember exactly what it was but I remember that it tasted incredible.

We went to the Blue Lagoon for our “hen / stag” party when everyone arrived in Iceland. Whilst I love their skincare and visiting the spa, Iceland is full of more natural hot springs, some of which are literally just hot springs you can find using GPS and others which have basic facilities to change. I was excited to visit the Secret Lagoon because I knew it would be a lot quieter than the Blue Lagoon and it’s in a geothermal area so you can watch geysers and steam vents from the pool. The Secret Lagoon has a little bar and changing facilities which sit on the edge of the pool. Only a handful of people were there when we visited and most were locals enjoying a sunny day off. The water was a few degrees hotter than I was used to and whilst that doesn’t sound like a lot, it meant I could only stay in for 20 minutes or so at a time. The surrounding area was so interesting walking around cooling off then going back in was fun.

As the water wasn’t as salty as places like the Blue Lagoon it wasn’t very buoyant, so we used pool floats to drift around.

I have to admit that it was nice to slow down and relax a bit on holiday. I think to some degree our honeymoon spoiled me a little bit and I’ve found myself dreaming of luxurious hotels, gourmet food and lazing around in hot tubs, but I think the adventurer in me will always win and before too long I would get bored. The second half of our honeymoon was busier as we decided to fit in a few things we hadn’t done on previous trips.

Reading this made me feel so happy for you, Amy. I LOVE that the hotels you went to left the both of you little treats and upgrades. These photos are absolutely gorgeous — Iceland is beautiful! Cannot wait to read about part 2 of your honeymoon. x
